Ethan Frome
Edith Wharton
A beautifully untypical novella that left me in mute misery, a long while after the black ending closed. It's wonderful because it is so concise, cutting, atmospherically apt. Powerfully short.
At end, the realist in me can accept the final, perhaps only escape for the heroes, one like a Shakespearean tragedy.
One of my favourites, easily.
